Review
Like your indie rock smart but not smug? Emphatic but not full-blown emo? Surviving the Quiet will bring out the Seafood lover in you. The London quartet's debut dabbles ably in a multitude of proven styles. On the softer side, "Easy Path" comes on like Velocity Girl at their least poppy or Unrest at their most, while "Dear Leap the Ride" imagines Lou Barlow having a go at the Gram Parsons songbook. The album's second half lives a little rougher. "Guntrip" is more than a small nod to Sonic Youth, and "Toggle" showcases an impressive knack for Mogwai's soft-then-blisteringly-loud dynamics. "Folksong Crisis" does the same, but throws in a female vocalist and flute for good measure. Stay away from the album's incomprehensibly annoying kazoo and feedback on the closing track, and you're in for a fun ride. --Bob Michaels
