Review

Twenty-two-year-old wunderkind Adam Richman produced, engineered, mixed, and played every instrument on the accomplished Patience and Science. Naturally, the young musician wrote and performed all the songs, as well (although he often tours with backing band the Girls). Originally released in 2004, his second album, after an acoustic debut, was re-released the following year. Since that time, Richman has relocated from suburban Allentown, PA to New York City, with a lot of touring along the way. His basic recipe calls for a large serving of power-pop mixed with a dash of punk rock. Richman claims a number of artists as influences, but the ones he resembles most include Elvis Costello, Matthew Sweet, and Green Day. The results, particularly on "What Can Make You Mine?" and "The Loneliness Song," are catchy, radio-ready, and as he so accurately puts it, "shiny." Patience and Science is a promising introduction to a precocious talent. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
