The Brooklyn-based quintet Ambulance LTD delivers is a solidly crafted nod to modern rock's potential for melding a few decades of wildly disparate musical influences into a compelling and cohesive new whole. From the Sea and Cake cool of "Stay Where You Are" to the distortion and dissonant drone that eventually swamp "Helmsman"'s pop foundations, there's a savory dollop here for every indie taste. It's a smart sensibility perhaps inspired by its members own eclectic roots (which reach to the four corners of America and Ireland), and one that doesn't shy away from lifting chord progressions from Roy Orbison ("Young Urban Professional") or fusing fervent new-wave jangle to sparkling, acoustic McCartney-isms on the day-dreamy "Heavy Lifting." And while it remains to be seen if they focus those talents on a cohesive long-player, this debut holds much promise. --Jerry McCulleyAmbulance Ltd. is a New York based five-piece rock group formed in 2000. Drawing influence from 60s psych, 70s rock. 80s pop and 90s shoegazer, their sound is multi-faceted yet concise.
