Review

Certain bands demand to be remembered in death, even if they weren't recognized in their life. Such is the triumph and tragedy of ANASARCA. Discography 1994-1997 collects this short-lived Washington, DC group's two seven-inch and demo recordings in one package, and presents them as memorial to a criminally overlooked hardcore band of the mid-'90s. These seven songs demonstrate ANASARCA's vision, leaning towards the noisier, indie punk side of the hardcore sphere, sharing commonalties with seminal acts SPARKMARKER and SHOTMAKER, highlighted by sounds from their hometown. ANASARCA layered melodic discord with metallic rhythms, a deft knowledge of when to unleash and when to restrain themselves for maximum effect, earnest vocals more willing to be screamed and sung rather than growled, and a sincerity and artistry found wanting in much of aggressive music. Discography 1994-1997 demonstrates one thing about ANASARCA: those who remember don't need to be told about their greatness, those who don't just need to listen.
