Review

London-based Area 54 was formed in 1997 by frontman Lakis Kyriacou. The band sits solidly in the melodic metal arena, drawing heavily on influences such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Megadeth. What makes them stand out from the crowd is the overall freshness of their sound. They inject just enough modern metal attitude and groove to really have the potential to break into the mainstream. While holding true to their metal roots, their accessibility can't be denied. Area 54's debut album No Visible Scars falls into the traditional melodic metal category. Voted as the runner-up in the "Best New Band" category of the 2000 Metal Hammer's readers poll (second only to Slipknot), Area 54 is a group to watch.
