Review

Amidst a bramble of noises the Devil Dub god opens this collection by growling "Welcome to hell!," but this set from San Francisco duo Ben Wa is more like heaven on earth. With enormously fat beats and brooding bass, their musical trip begins in the electronically altered mind and branches out from there. Plenty of underground attitude--a bit calculated with dark recitation at times--dominates this delicious mix of twisted and manipulated rhythms. There's a graceful touch of King Tubby here and there, with metallic elements echoing forth like soft taffy between warm, wet bleeps and drips spiraling in and out of the cosmic landscape. "Beelzebub Dub" molds a magically psychedelic soundscape out of the Hammond B3, while "White Russian Dub" turns a guitar into hypnotic ghostly calling. Whatever the track, Devil Dub is sure to make your woofers bump and grind and the trunk of your car happily vibrate away. --Karen Karleski "Devil Dub" is Ben Wa's first full length CD release, an unholy version of ambient dub and psychotropic dark beats.
