Review

Birdie marks the long-awaited return of Debsey Wykes (formerly of Dolly Mixture and Coming Up Roses) and Paul Kelly (ex-East Village) to the world of music. The two of them met in Saint Etienne's touring band, and formed Birdie with the intention of making what they once described as "the Velvet Underground meets French film music." A couple of exquisite singles followed on the Summershine and It labels, and Some Dusty, their debut full-length, makes good on their promise. With help from a full band (including string arrangements by the High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan), Some Dusty is the soundtrack to an autumn sunrise over a sleepy village: chilly, dreamy, comfortable, and slightly melancholy. Wykes's voice is as lovely and smoky as ever, and the songs are uniformly relaxed, unhurriedly propelled by restrained drumming, Hammond organ, and jangly guitar. Not surprisingly, there are nods to earlier bands: the lush, soul-tinged "Dusty Morning" and "Let Her Go" bring to mind St. Etienne's lush, sophisticated Good Humour era, while "Laugh," "Folk Singer," and "Port Sunlight" recall the Burt Bacharach overtones of late Dolly Mixture. Originally released by It Records in England, Kindercore has made this fine album available at a domestic price with an extra track ("Thanks for the Birthday Card," originally an import B-side) and the stylish "Folk Singer" video. -Mike Appelstein
