Review

When it comes to smarty-pants rock that makes you want to rip it up and start again, this four-piece from San Francisco has all the right moves. "Cause You Can" is sharp, angular and fast and will make you jump around like your favorite Franz Ferdinand song but it's somehow its own thing. On other songs, the band sounds like what if an amped-up and pre-Wynona Dave Pirner joined a Television cover band, or even imagines a non-lackadaisacal Modest Mouse collaborating with the Constantines. Their perky little songs are held together by enough melody, tension, and weirdness as to deserve many, many listens. No Midnight is easily one of the coolest and most unexpected debut albums of the year. --Mike McGonigalA rowdy mix of radio-friendly rock, jangly ho-downs and epic freakouts, Birdmonster's debut was recorded at breakneck speed in a Los Angeles studio with producer/ mixer Brad Cook (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age), No Midnight captures the band's urgency and spontaneity with exciting results. "We wanted to have every single note, everything that was played, have as much heart as possible," singer Peter Arcuni explains. At times blending Springsteen-style earnestness with driving guitars and healthy doses of snarl and twang, the 13 tracks span the gamut, show-case each member's diverse influences and achieves what Arcuni, gui-tarist David Klein, bassist Justin Tenuto and drummer Zach Winter set out to accomplish.
