Review

Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer came together as The Wailers and took reggae from its island home out into the world. With the clarity of hindsight, the breakup of this powerful triumvirate was inevitable as well as necessary, so that each mega-talent could go on to solo super-stardom. Bunny Wailer, the only survivor of the three, has released little to no new material in the past several years (his releases have all been Marley and Wailer "do-overs"), but this roots warrior still has too many hits of his own for a single "Best of." This 1995 must-have compilation gives roots reggae fans a generous 16 cuts that include such early virtuosities as "Rockers," "Love Fire," and "Roots, Radics, Rockers, Reggae." More current and equally luminous efforts are represented by "Liberation," "Warrior," "Soul Rebel," "Redemption Song," and "Time Will Tell." --Elena Oumano
