Review

Country crooner Collin Raye's Counting Sheep is for a much wider audience than his fans; brightly engaging to both old and young ears, this delightful children's recording is sure to be a hit with parents of all musical affiliations. Gathering up a set of both originals and standards, Counting Sheep ranges from the kiddie-pop magic of the title track to a rendition of the Beatles' "Blackbird," Irish traditional lullaby "Too Ra Loo Ta Loo Ral," and, from the children's classic canon, "When You Wish Upon a Star." Gentle strings sweep up against tickling piano and acoustic guitar and vibes tinkle and chime. Raye's vocals are predictably clear and sweet and especially endearing on the hushed Disney classic that closes the album, "Stay Awake." A special moment is achieved with "A Mother and Father's Prayer," in which Raye duets with rock & roll mama Melissa Manchester. --Paige La Grone
