Review

From carefree love songs to moments of introspective despair, Dave Moore conjures up a varied and very satisfying 10-song set of intelligent acoustic folk-pop for his third solo release. More of a stylist than a singer, the one-time Prairie Home Companion bandleader and frequent Greg Brown sideman mines a similar musical vein as Brown, Leon Redbone and even J.J. Cale. "Midnight" is appropriately dark and moody, with Moore's vocals barely rising above a whiskey-soaked whisper, while "Magic Dust" has an appealing, radio-friendly chorus. Breaking Down to 3 is a wonderfully crafted record whose quiet beauty reveals a real emotional depth. --Percy Keegan
