Review

After Screeching Weasel, the Didjits remain Chicago's foremost proponents of no-frills, faster-louder punk, heavy on the hooks, with silly (but not stupid) lyrics. This 1993 effort nearly matches the over-the-top enthusiasm of 1988's Hey Judester, which is still the band's high point. The tempos are relentless, the sound crisp and powerful, and guitarist-vocalist Rick Sims practically assaults memorable tunes such as "Agent 99" (a wishful fantasy about Maxwell Smart's sidekick) and "Evilized." The trio has had better taste in covers in the past, though. Previous efforts have included Little Richard, the MC5 and Jimi Hendirx. Here, all we get is the Plasmatics' "Monkey Suit." --Jim DeRogatis
