Review

After three records as the singer for Ekova, Dierdre Dubois steps out on her own with One. The 12-song debut strips away the overt world music styles of her old band, leaving the club-friendly sounds of trip-hop, dance and lounge. A host of musicians and producers lend a hand, including Ekova bandmate Mehldi Haddab, Cricket and Karsh Kale, and they do an excellent job of wrapping this moody collection of haunting melodies and filigree textures around the singer's expressive voice. Dierdre herself upholds her part of the bargain as she soars, riffs and purrs in English and French in way that recalls the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Frasier and Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard. Highlights include the panoramic "A Way To Love" and the electro-delic "Waiting For Spring." Those whose tastes lean more toward world music may be a little disappointed by the lack of fusion here, but there is a lot of imaginative programming and a world class voice to be enjoyed on this fine debut. --Tad HendricksonAfter three releases as the vocalist with the acclaimed multi- cultural band Ekova, as well as guest vocal slots with groups like Da Lata and Jean Michel Jarre, Dierdre Dubois (now simply known as Dierdre) is stepping out on her own with her first solo release. Over the years, Dierdre's unmistakable voice has been described by journalists as, "otherworldly", "transcendent" and "impossibly pure". Now on her solo debut, Dierdre combines that unmistakable vocal instrument with cutting edge electronic, dance and electro-pop textures. The new CD moves away from Ekova's more global influences and into unexpected new terrain. From the transformed cover version of "Nights in White Satin" to the propulsive pop, club anthem, "Firefly", One is sure to fascinate Dierdre's many fans while exposing her to a whole new audience.
