Review

The Ex Models' debut, Other Mathematics, opens with a scream, or, more specifically, a yelp, as vocalist Shahin Motia salutes Devo and spasms frenetically through 13 songs in 24 minutes. Whether Ex Models mean to refer to math rock in the album title or not (ostensibly the hyperaccurate post-punk/post-rock guitar genre that boasts off-kilter rhythms and tangled guitar lines), it's funny which parts of math rock Ex Models appropriate--the good ones. Spiced with Gang of Four, Wire, Talking Heads, Shellac, and lots of attitude, Other Mathematics is a nonstop barrage of torrential riff bursting, in which rock-nerd, verge-of-Tourette's vocals whoop and holler. Crisp, immaculate drumming commands both guitars' sharp edges--from their combative knot tying to their more cooperative machine gun blast antisolos--jettisoning the songs to ecstatic pogo-dancing heights and rapturous conclusions. With the swagger of Jon Spencer and the energy and wit of Mark Mothersbaugh or a young David Byrne, Motia conducts the band through a series of vector-based algorithmic proofs on this thoroughly fresh love letter to early punk and new wave pioneers--and no one in this four-piece misses a cue to testify. --Cyndi Elliott
