Review
With the release of Röyksopp's fabulously filmic Melody A.M. disc and Flunk's For Sleepyheads Only debut, 2002 was the year Norway finally became known for something other than black metal. Woozy, gauzy, muted, blurry, and very groovy, For Sleepyheads Only occupies that unlikely place between folk and electronica. At once organic and studio-tweaked, the disc layers Björk-soundalike Anja Oyen Vister's creamy, dreamy vocals over a hushed base of samples, keys, and softly strummed guitars, creating an ethereal, past-midnight vibe. Flunk producer Ulf Nygaard doubtless has a Mazzy Star record in his collection (probably Massive Attack and Sneaker Pimps, too), but Flunk's sound is even more drowsy, as is evident in their willfully downbeat cover of New Order's "Blue Monday." A surprisingly lovely and aptly named debut. --Kim HughesDynamic debut from Norwegian folk electronica quartet Flunk.
