Review

In a sea of generic punk rock bands, Get Set Go manages to distinguish themselves with a uniquely attractive sound coveted by many but only successfully tapped into by a few. Their unpretentious and appealing style is reminiscent of something somewhere between a punked-out Death Cab for Cutie and The Ramones. Somehow they've found the perfect balance between catchy simplicity and a certain sophisticated complexity, giving them a quirky almost irreverent edge. Memorable and clean guitar riffs, strangely compelling bass lines, and strong drum beats compliment inviting melodies and basically brilliant lyrics. The vein of sharp-tongued wit and sarcasm running through each song has a poignancy, depth, and perspective inarguably not heard since Weezer released "Pinkerton" in 1996. Their sound reflects true emotional tumult and acerbic pessimism cut with wry humor, as opposed to sappy uninspired emo-esque self-pity. The album's strong emotional undercurrent only thinly veiled by melodic power-pop hooks and playful cynicism gives it a certain vulnerability that's incontestably propulsive.
