Review

This intriguing collection of 10 cover songs (conceptually reminiscent of the Walkabouts' Satisfied Mind) reveals both Hazeldine's varied influences and their considerable interpretive powers. From the mildly electric "Whiskey in the Jar" to "It's Only Love" (a cover of John Doe's cover of Hank Cochran), the band wisely cloaks its brood of covers in spare, mostly acoustic arrangements that cut right to the songs' emotional cores. Vocalists Shawn Barton and Tonya Lamm are unerringly tasteful singers, ably rendering the traditional hillbilly harmonies of "Mining Camp Blues," sweetening Peter Gabriel's "Cuckoo Cocoon" with girls' slumber-party unison, and emphasizing the dark and moody for their version of Radiohead's "Lucky." Crowned by a gorgeous rendition of "A Song for You" that rivals Gram Parsons's original with Emmylou Harris, Orphans offers simple, affecting performances of songs that, if you didn't like them before, become irresistible in Hazeldine's hands. --Carolyn Wennblom
