Review

As the outrageous lead singer of the Stranglers, which formed in 1975, Hugh Cornwell can be considered something of a punk and new wave survivor. On his latest solo album, Cornwell balances the invigorating aggression of the Stranglers' earliest efforts with the mature songwriting and sophisticated performances of his more recent work. While Cornwell's vocal style is similar to those of many other English postpunks, this recording is both distinctive and subtly theatrical. Edgy, ominous, and intelligent, Cornwell's brooding imagery fuels dark, seductive compositions such as "One Burning Desire" and "Long Dead Train." With layers of electric guitars and keyboards surrounding Cornwell's haunting voice, this is an evocative collection of well-crafted songs that are contemporary without sounding commercial. --Mitch Myers
