Review

When fronted by its founder, the amazing Jacob "Killer" Miller, who died tragically in a car accident in the late 1980s, this group was a reggae institution. His replacement, Carlton Coffee, is no vocal slouch, but who, after all, could fill Jacob's shoes? As this album proves, the group's writing also suffered from that great loss. The new tunes in this collection are faintly derivative, though respectable, efforts along the lines of the usual reggae idioms. Inner Circle does better on the covers--"Black Roses," "Freedom Street," and a jumped-up version of the '70s reggae classic "Picture on the Wall." --Elena Oumano
