Review

Brooklyn's own Jigmastas (DJ Spinna and MC Kriminul) have consistently laced the hip-hop netherworld with noteworthy 12-inch singles (check the criminally underrated "Lyrical Fluctuation" remix featuring Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def, and Shabaam Sahdeeq, among others). However, when you match Spinna's Jay Dee-like musical eclecticism with the skills of an average MC, the results are a bit disappointing. Luckily, Infectious gets by with a little help from their friends. Guest appearances by Sadat X, on the neo-Ice Age bashing "Don't Get It Twisted" (peep the tap-dancer clicking sounds), and underground heroine Apani B Fly MC on "Apology Not Accepted" obscure Kriminul's shortcomings. "8 Million Stories" and the police-harassment narrative "Hollar" (featuring wailing guitars from Vernon Reid of Living Colour fame) are worthwhile listens. But it's the contagious sped-up Brazilian vocal loop on "C.S.S" that ensures that Spinna's accolades will continue to pile up like Tupac-is-alive conspiracy theories. --Dalton Higgins
