Review

Drummer Joey Baron reunites the unlikely quartet that made 1997's funky Down Home and delivers another superb set of nine just-crafty-enough Baron originals. As they did last time, the foursome leaves the pocket on a few occasions to work in a few contemplative, atmospheric tunes amid the funky grooves. What makes it all work so magically is the fact that Baron's veteran cohorts--alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe, guitarist Bill Frisell, and bassist Ron Carter--allow their own distinct musical personalities to shine through without ever putting themselves above the common good. This is a versatile and adventurous bunch to begin with, and it's wonderful to hear them listen to and feed off each other so comfortably. Not to be outdone by his sidemen, Baron marvelously drives the songs with subtlety, touch, and precision, reminding us all that tone is not merely something for horns and strings to think about. --Marc Greilsamer
