Review

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the tuba's demise in jazz, guitarist, composer, and Hollywood sound designer Johnnie Valentino rights the wrong with his unchained, funky, toe-tapping tuba-and-organ quintet. Catchy, irresistible tunes, propelled by New Orleans' second-line and South Philly swagger - and complemented by clarinet, harmonium, and even mandolin — will appeal to a wide audience. Features great players - Mick Rossi (Philip Glass Ensemble), Bob Sheppard (Peter Erskine Trio, Chick Corea's "Origin") and Mark Ferber (Lee Konitz, Don Byron) - just havin' fun!

"Johnnie Valentino's got the name, the looks, and the ability to attract significant talent to make it big time. Even more importantly, he has the chops and a unique ear for composition." -CADENCE

Funky, with a New Orleans vibe, Stingy Brim has a touch of humor, but this set is a lot more than a good time roll. A good deal of depth, edginess and a perversely modern lean.—Dan McClenaghan, AllAboutJazz.com

All in all, Johnnie & his group catch a highly individualistic style, with an array of gloriously fluid techniques expressed by the sidemen, and a seemingly endless flow of viable & linear harmonic & musical ideas.—George W. Carroll, The Musicians' Ombudsman

Valentino communicates through his instrument with the emotional fervor of an inspired preacher on Sunday morning. Stingy brim? Maybe, but this highly recommended session isn't stingy, and it's brimming with excitement.—Jim Santella, AllAboutJazz.com
