Review
By the '80s, Johnny Paycheck had gone through so much it's a wonder he still had the stuff. Every commercial success met with personal or financial failure; his outlaw image and his alcohol and drug abuse were beginning to wear him down. As though looking for guidance, Paycheck began touring with Merle Haggard and recorded this suite of ten Haggard songs, including some of his best--though not always best-known--barroom weepers. Backed by the Strangers' stately playing, and Billy Sherrill's spacious but surprisingly stringless production, Paycheck's weathered, soulful voice digs into every line. The duets, especially on "Turning Off a Memory," are among the best performances in either singer's career. Some will find the brief spoken introductions chatty and dated, but Paycheck's sincerity is never in question: This is stone country of unfailing emotional force. --Roy Francis Kasten
