Review

Carol Elizabeth Jones and James Leva are really sheep in wolves' clothing. Their commitment to organic instrumentation and their direct presentation has landed them in the traditional-country bin. However, much of their work borrows heavily from contemporary country: Their vocals are polished, their lyrics are a bit cerebral, and many of their melodies offer pop-oriented hooks. None of this is meant as criticism, only as clarification. The result is an appealing blend of traditional and contemporary modes, one that borrows from old-time, bluegrass, honky-tonk, countrypolitan, and even modern country sounds. All of these influences are boiled down to a simply stated and sometimes emotionally engaging collection of songs. --Marc Greilsamer
