Review

Well, now, here's an interesting one. New Orleans bred, but Los Angeles cured, from the sound of it, Lisa Angelle arrives at her splashy debut with a portfolio of writer's credits (Wynonna, Trisha Yearwood, Kathy Mattea) and the confidence to perform all-original material and coproduce with popmeister Andrew Gold. On a song like "I Wear Your Love," an infectious Cajun hoedown with hiccuping vocals and goofy lyrics ("Like the smile on Mona Lisa, baby / Everybody sees it"), it's apparent that she's got a lot of music in her and isn't afraid to cross sacred boundaries. Though at times it's tempting to write her off as a dilettantish Shania wannabe ("Twisted," "Midnight Rodeo"), she comes up with some real music--"I Don't Know Why," which conjures the spirit of Patsy Cline, and "Sparrow," a prayerful spiritual ballad. One thing's for sure after hearing Angelle's debut: you'll know she's been here. --Alanna Nash
