Review
Save for its delicate tone, Looper's Up a Tree doesn't sound much like what you'd expect from a side project of a Belle and Sebastian member (bassist Stuart David). But its meld of stories, melodies, and electronic-pop sounds captures a hazy sweetness. --Rickey WrightIt's impossible to discuss Looper and not mention that the band's leader, Stuart David, is also the bassist in Scotland's cultishly revered Belle & Sebastian. But while that band takes '60s folk rock as their blueprint, Looper is a decidedly modern creation, melding synthy keyboards, samples, and drum machines with lo-tech counterparts such as harmonica, piano, and acoustic guitar. Up a Tree is a joyous romp through the sonic playground that is Looper's world, with David's vocals serving as an earthbound counterpoint to the music, which is sometimes so light and bouncy it threatens to float away on a passing cloud. Looper is tough to describe accurately, and maybe that's part of the appeal--it has a boy-next-door quality that is simultaneously endearing, charming, and a little bit off kilter. --Donovan Finn Brainchild of Stuart David ,belle & Sebastian Bassist.
