Review

The Tigres define the modern norteƱo sound, setting the pattern for virtually every group since the 1970s, and they remain the genre's biggest stars. This disc includes many of their most important songs, from the early "Contrabando y Traicion (Contraband and Betrayal)" and "La Banda del Carro Rojo (The Red Car Gang)," which started the wave of narcocorridos (drug ballads), to songs of the immigrant experience like "Jaula de Oro (Cage of Gold)" and "La Tumba del Mojado (The Wetback's Grave)." More recent songs include the massive drug hit "Pacas de a Kilo (Kilo Packets)" and the comical "El Celular (The Cellular Phone)," giving a fine career overview. --Elijah Wald
