Review

Knots don't jump out at you. You could listen to it once or twice and write it off as a sweet but sleepy singer-songwriter exercise. Listen closely, though, and you'll discover that a song like "Something of Myself," despite its Garth Brooks-like declaration "I wanna make something of myself," is really a wicked satire of all those dreamers too lazy to get off the couch. "Take It Easy" at first seems like a preachy song about old-fashioned values, but listen again and you'll find it's actually a sly satire on the impossibility of ever knowing anything about love. Not all 10 songs on the album contain such surprises; a handful are every bit as sentimental and slight as they first appear. The majority, though, are as smart and witty as anything being written in Nashville these days. --Geoffrey Himes
