Review

The first thing a listener's bound to notice about this CD is that Mary Lydia Ryan sounds a bit like Tori Amos. Girl with piano (check), peculiar and uncomfortable subject matter (check), distinctive vocal enunciation (check). But the second thing a listener's bound to notice is that the similarity isn't really that pervasive. For one thing, Ryan's a lot subtler, both as a singer and as a pianist; she's also got a broader musical background, as evidenced by the jazzy touches she frequently adds to her songs. Highlights of the aptly named Diaphanous include the opening song, with its twisted-carnival background music proving perfectly suited to the subject matter; the interplay between vocal line and saxophone on "Self Control"; and the rhumba-like dance rhythm of "Begging Me." Many of this music's attributes don't reveal themselves right away, making each subsequent listen a renewed pleasure. --Genevieve WilliamsA blending of pop sensibility, with jazz cool. Though often compared to Kate Bush, Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, Mary has created a sound that is all her own. As a pianist, singer/songwriter, Mary's album "Diaphanous" showcases this unique artist's depth of writing and equally matched performance abilities.

She is joined on the album by such noted musicians as Amy Denio on Accordion and Saxaphone, Dale Fanning on Drums, and Arne Livingston on Bass.
