Review

Chicago performance group, MASS Ensemble released their second CD, “Pleiades”, at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. Included on this new CD are two different pieces that were recorded live and on site: “Symphony for Stringing the Earth” was recorded at the World Financial Center's Winter Garden in New York City. This is the first recording of the Earth Harp. The second site-specific recording of the Earth Harp, “Wind in the Earth Harp”, occurred at the Field Museum in Chicago. This piece is a haunting documentation of steady cross breezes exciting the strings into sound, and literally playing the Earth Harp. This new CD is even more eclectic in mood and genre-blending than the first MASS CD. There are specific pieces from renaissance and classical music including MASS's version of Ravel's Bolero, and minimalist or ambient feels in pieces which use effected vocals and reversed sounds. There are also elements of modern pop songwriting that appear in pieces like “Dreamland”, which features banjo and Long Bow. All of the pieces include sounds from the invented instruments of Bill Close.
