Review

In 1925, fledgling Memphis bluesman Will Shade was blown away by Clifford Hayes's Dixieland Jug Blowers, a popular Louisville band that used an empty jug for its vigorous bass rhythms. Shade met an empty-whiskey-bottle virtuoso named Lionhouse and bought him a jug, then enlisted regular partners Tee Wee Blackman and Ben Ramey to form the legendary Memphis Jug Band, the greatest of its kind. This superb collection spans the rollicking party band's prime years with its ever-changing personnel, which included such masters as Furry Lewis, Will Weldon, Charlie Burse, Jab Jones, and Vol Stevens. Of the group's superior songwriting repertoire--covering blues, string-band music, and dance tunes to please its multiracial audiences--truly outstanding are "The Old Folks Started It," sung from the depths by Minnie Wallace, and "Stealin' Stealin'," which was covered by Memphis Jug Band devotee Jerry Garcia on his Shady Grove CD with David Grisman. --Alan Greenberg
