Review
This album, essentially, plays like a recording of the time Money Mark was left in charge of the multicultural hour at the easy-listening station--it is music that reassuringly pats the listener on the head with one hand, while nonchalantly tickling his ribs with the fingertips of the other. An enchanting collection of songs, Change Is Coming walks a fine musical line between genres and influences. It does so splendidly, reinforcing the notion that this is yet another departure for a musician who thrives on deviance. The bass lines do not overtly drive the songs along; rather, they deepen the smooth texture, adding an aura of undulation to each tune. The taciturn melodies, meanwhile, jump all around the instrumental realm of sound, while maintaining a continuity of pace and feel. This is remarkable, considering that the wordless song lines vacillate between organ and xylophone sounds, scratchy guitar and scratchier keyboard sounds.
