St. Louis alt-country outfit Nadine inspire comparisons to Gram Parsons and Neil Young, but the melancholy melodies and heartfelt lyrics found on the sonically rich, meticulously produced Downtown, Saturday are both emotionally stirring and strikingly unique. Adam Reichmann's emotive tenor caresses these beautiful songs atop a blend of sweet country, smooth soul, and sour rock. --Marc Greilsamer Midway through Nadine's U.S. debut, lead singer and songwriter Adam Reichmann reveals, "I'm gonna sleep with the radio on, so that I don't miss you." Accompanied by a woody acoustic guitar and murmuring Hammond organ, his voice rings with sweetness and heartache. It's the quietest moment on Downtown, Saturday, an album that marries flowing country melodies with classic soul grooves and Crazy Horse wailings. Reichmann is a criminally talented songwriter: his enigmatic, emotionally mature songs distinguish this album from the alt-country average. The CD was completely self-produced and recorded in a self-built St. Louis studio, and its ambitions--suggested by hip-hop sampling and meditative piano pop--never overrun the textures laid down by bass player Todd Schnitzer, ex-Wagon guitarist Steve Rauner, and guest drummers Matt Pence (Centro-matic) and Ken Coomer (Wilco).
