Review

Norman Foote's sixth album for young listeners once again demonstrates his clever ability to be very cool and warm at the same time. The first track, "Loose Tooth," with its humorous twist-ending is followed by the catchy and aptly named "Snuggle Up." It's obvious Foote likes kids and is empathetic toward them. In "Think of Something Good" the listener is encouraged to look on the bright side of life when things seem a little dark and cloudy. Norman sings: "So try to think of something good, something you like to do / There's no point feeling miserable / it doesn't look good on you." The song "Deeper Than the Deep Blue" has a tender simplicity children should find fun to sing along to while giving them that happy, secure feeling that music for the very young should impart. With an easygoing feel and production approach throughout, the styles range from lounge music and bossa nova to zydeco and beyond. The title song, "One Thousand Pennies" with its Celtic beat takes us to a child's thoughts of what he thinks he can buy with One Thousand Pennies. Maybe to him they are magic pennies and seem to be worth much more than money itself. Loose Tooth is a conversation between a father and his child. All fathers would love to pull out their child's loose tooth if their child would only let them. This song has a comedic twist to it's ending with the child saying to his father "If you really want to pull out someone's tooth pull one out of your own". Graduation Day has another cool Latin American beat and paints a picture of a child on his graduation day. It also has a comedic surprise ending when we learn he has only graduated from kindergarten. Norman's sensibility on this song shows how he can relate to young listeners ."I'm ready for grade one, I can tie my shoes. I don't need velcro". Snuggle Up is a sweet sing-along type of tune that reminds us all of how wonderful a snuggle can be! Lost Umbrellas and Odd Socks takes us on a fanciful and imaginative journey to the land of lost umbrellas.
