Review

What could have been a Goo Goo Dolls rehash is instead surprisingly special. Hello Vertigo doesn't go overboard on the angst and, even better, the band brings a fistful of catchy rock to the table. Papa Vegas frontman Joel Ferguson has a great set of honey-husky pipes that brighten whatever song he's singing. On "Something Wrong" Ferguson's voice locks in with minor-chords and mid-tempos--the rare example of substance clobbering a well-worn style. "Bombshell" has one of those catchy choruses lesser bands would trade for their bass player, and "Mesmerized" is an appropriately swirly ballad that'll lodge itself in your head for a week.Definitely recommended. --Jason Josephes
