Review

Prog never really went away, it just slid out of vogue when Punk came and obliterated practically everything in site. There have always been practitioners of the craft, mostly in Europe, but America has had it's fair share as well, and lately this much maligned creature has slowly emerged from the LaBrea tarpits of our culture to stage a bit of a comeback thanks to bands like the extremely talented Phreeworld.

The music of Phreeworld hearkens back to the days of classic Yes, King Crimson, and Genesis (way before the Phil Collins showbiz routine made them suck!). And unlike a lot of the modern Prog I've heard here and there, these guys manage to capture the essence that I and so many others found deeply moving as a form of musical expression. There was a certain warmth, a certain barely discernible inexactitude, and a very certain sense of adventure that the older groups had that has been lost in a lot of Progressive music now. While the musicians in this band are clearly talented, they actually manage to sound human...and they even sound like they enjoy what they are doing! And when was the last time you heard music sound like that?

Vocally there are several very different voices in this band. A couple of the singers it took me a while to get used to, but once having done so I enjoyed their styles as much as the singer who originally caught my attention, a gentleman who sounds remarkably like Chris Squire, the bassist from Yes. Musically, the styles range from delightful 90 mile-an-hour bombast (The Chariot) to Led Zepplinish midtempo rockers (Wardrums) to evocative and mystical ballads (The Empress). The lyrics, while occasionally straying into the realms of cosmic subjectivity that got the originators of the genre so much flak hurled at them in the old days, do tackle some here and now topics as well. One of the songs I downloaded seemed to be decrying the use of sweatshop labor. At least that's what it sounded like to me...I'll be kinda disappointed If I'm wrong. (As an aside, one of the things that also grabbed my attention was that my long backburnered idea of devoting a songcycle to the Major Arcana of the Tarot has been done already...by a bunch of guys from Seattle!!! It just isn't fair...)

If you are interested in hearing an Indie band that excels in playing a form of music that has as it's basic premise the notion of defying all expectations, you could hardly do much better than Phreeworld.
