Review

The solemnity of the drumbeats and Amharic monologue that kick off this debut are meant to signal the arrival of an important voice in the roots-reggae genre. Malachi hails from England, not Jamaica, where reggae's much-vaunted communal spirit is on the wane, as producers and label owners scramble for product that will reverse the music's sinking fortunes. Apart from the contentious hub of the reggae industry, Malachi's free to draw on the music's hoary lyrical staples and inject them with the full force of his belief. For roots-reggae fans in search of a voice to interpret those great old reggae themes, this set is a case where "nothing much new" becomes its greatest asset. Raw and unpolished, Malachi isn't always on key and is certainly not the best vocalist the music has to offer. But what he lacks in pretty singing, he almost makes up for in a sense of urgency and intense commitment that recalls an earlier reggae era when the music wasn't about money, but a sacred mission. --Elena Oumano
