Review

Thinking About The Good Times is the debut album from Reno, released on October 21st, the album follows on from their stunning debut single `Costa' out on the October 7th. Impossible to classify, Reno's sound veers from the lush orchestration of a John Barry Soundtrack, via St Etienne, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel a splash of trip-hop, some old-school funk, Nancy Sinatra, Serge Gainsbourg and a warehouse party circa 1990!

Whilst there are tracks that stand out on initial listening, it is also a record that reveal its secret gems gradually. There are some songs which deeply are vocal led - `Costa' for example is a million miles away from the Hammond groove epic `Rock `n' Roll'. Others, like Still Need Your Love almost shy away from attention, before revealing their beauty.

Phil Burns & Andy Holt - Reno have enlisted the help three vocalists to come up with their unique sound. First is Gina Davies, whose slinky tones can be heard on the laid-back funk of When You're In Love. The sweet vocals of singer number two (hear her on Pretty) will be familiar to any respectable warehouse rave veteran as Marina Van Rooy, who sang 1990 hit, "Sly One". The third voice however came as the biggest surprise. Employing the song-writing skills of their friend Dave Barratt, Reno had a female vocalist in mind but once Dave started to sing it was obvious he was the only option. Dave's contribution on both `Costa' and `Savannah Steep' imbues each with an almost spiritual quality. In places ghostly, in others cinematic, the overall result is added soul which makes them uplifting in an almost gospel way.

With `Thinking About The Good Times' Reno have made an album full of music that is universal, an album that is perfect to relax to, to drive to and to entertain to but most importantly to listen to. Soulful, moody, dreamy and melancholic `Thinking About The Good Times' is a soundtrack for pretty much every aspect of modern life.
