Review

Robert Ward began his music career alongside Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, and Sir Mack Rice. Their funky Ohio band, after launching their solo careers, then evolved into the Ohio Players. Ward's style is bluesier than his cohorts', and laden with such heavy tremolo that it sounds Chinese; fans of Lonnie Mack's style will love this. Fear No Evil, from 1990, is his return to recording and is exuberant. "Something for Nothing" includes a full-on blues horn section, à la Johnny Taylor at Stax; the title track drips with solid soul, its driving rhythm building each verse to a satisfying, swinging chorus. The tremolo tracks--especially "Forgive Me Darling" and "Your Love Is Amazing"--will astound and thrill. This is the rare modern blues album that sounds both contemporary and classic. --Robert Gordon
