Review

Sarah Dougher's (Cadallaca) third album with Jon Nikki is more exploratory than her previous two, Day One and Walls Ablaze. The Bluff, which is light on full-throttle rock but heavy on textured guitar and organ, shifts the pace from track to track. Dougher owns one of the most balls-out, arresting timbres in rock & roll--her voice, which reflects the honesty and vividness of her lyrics, has both a suave pop finish and the confrontational qualities of rock. The most driven track, "Must Believe," exemplifies Dougher's vocal strength, as she wails along fevered chords and skittish drums. "Don't expect me to feel / Anything I don't think is real," she proclaims on "Wide Eyed." Sifting through her expanding expectations of love, Dougher sings about her discoveries. "She sees your flaws and not your charms / Yet all you want is back in her arms," she admits on "System Works." The Bluff showcases melodies that switch from frisky to haunting to melancholy, and it puts Dougher at the head of the post-riot-grrrl class. --Jeanne FuryHer 3rd solo album on Mr. Lady Records, Sarah Dougher has successfully created a world where disguises are worn, sexual deception is the norm, truth is counterfeit and fake is real. 'The Bluff' explores a diverse sonic and emotional landscape and is a leap forward in musical prowess. Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Quasi) plays drums/percussion & guest vocalist Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney & Cadallaca) lays down her trademark tunnel yell.
