Review

Scott August is a gifted non-Native expert on the Native American flute, and he's got a NAMMY (Native American Music Award) to show for it. For his third album, August drops the nature sounds that are the stock in trade of Native flutists and relies on his own keyboard- and percussion-driven orchestrations. His tone is lighter and more buoyant than on previous CDs, but also, perhaps, more trivial. Songs like "Heart of the Sky" and "Ravens and Red-tails" bounce along with a sing-song quality like a Disney cartoon soundtrack. Rhythms range from faux-Native to vaguely eastern, but they sound over-quantized and locked. On a track like "Temple of the Sun," August gets into some deeper terrain, playing with the resonances of his double-barreled flute, and generating a pensive, desert caravan groove. But usually his music is cleaned and buffed to the point of being sanitized. New Fire is a pleasant album that fails to ignite. --John DilibertoWinner: Indian Summer Music Award (2006) and Native American Music Award nominee, New Fire invites you on a dynamic and exhilarating musical journey. Experience the power, drama and magic of spirited Native American flutes, driving world beat rhythms, and the seductive sounds of guitar and piano as they exquisitely blend with lush, soothing textures and an exotic array of instruments from around the world. Aztec drums, African kalimbas, Indonesian gamelans, Australian didgeridoos and haunting Mayan double flutes. All part of August's unique, unmistakable, and acclaimed best selling style.
