Review

After releasing their debut, "Three Cherries", on Perishable Records in 2000, Tim Hurley of Red Red Meat and Califone and Danni Iosello of Califone spent a year on the frigid Baltic coast of Germany courtesy of a Fulbright grant. "Trickboxes on the Pony Line" is the culmination of three years' worth of European home and studio recording (Lone Star Studio; Nuremberg, Germany) and Chicago basement tracking.

Listeners may hear echoes of "Station To Station", "The Basement Tapes", "Maxinquaye", "Rock Bottom", and "Tonight's the Night" on "Trickboxes". But no fingers crush like Tim Hurley's: wires pulled, snakes flushed, giants elved. Three years across two continents he sings and slides guitar into Danni Iosello's pale-faced drumming and wreaking harmonium, creating post-partum pop that swirls and hides like a ghost through an empty house.
