Review

In the early to mid 80's bands like REM, U2, XTC, The Cure, and The Violent Femmes were getting major airplay on college radio stations as well as on MTV and other TV venues. Soon "alternative" radio stations began appearing around the US. Independent or rock record labels were discovering a scene awash with untapped talent.

Fast forward to 2004, and we see some striking similarities and some notable differences to the early 80s. Untapped talent like SOLVING FOR X is being discovered - not on the radio or MTV - but via the Internet from websites such as CD Baby, GarageBand, cdreviews.com and Live365 Internet Radio.

At GarageBand.com, the world's largest website featuring independent music, SOLVING FOR X first single, "Crush", has rifled past 22,000 songs to reach the top 1% of the pop/rock charts. Other songs have performed impressively as well on GarageBand.com, with 5 Reviewers Picks Awards including Best Bass, Grooviest Rhythm and Best Dance Track for "Hey Darwin", Best Beat for "Crush", and Best Feel Good Track for "Young".

At cdreviews.com, one of the most visited and highly regarded music review sites on the Internet, Seth Steiling writes: "In their debut album 'What Planet Are You?', Solving For X managed to accomplish a rare feat in popular music today...it actually stands out as unique and provoking" Seth hails the album songs, highlighting "Crush" as the defining song on the album: "The chorus is the sort that gives you chills, and the arrangement of the song is absolutely perfect; it marks a musical intuition that bodes well for Solving For X's future".

SOLVING FOR X is getting attention from Internet radio as well, including KSQZ, an independent radio station in Austin, Texas that streams their live show on the Internet to a global audience. "KSQZ's soul purpose is to showcase great bands and great music that no one has heard...but should", says Arthur Conley, KSQZ program director/owner, "Solving For X addition to KSQZ will be a very good one".

This early success is hardly surprising because, like the bands who emerged from the scene in the early 80's, SOLVING FOR X remains true to the original definition of alternative music: honest and artful rock with intellectual sensibilities. If you are looking for a refreshing return to quality alternative pop/rock, What Planet Are You? is sure to satisfy your craving.
