The serene trip-hop beats of Sorten Muld's music float so easily into the ancient ballads of Scandinavia, you don't realize you're listening to an amalgam of historic folk and electronic dance music, but rather an entirely new and original genre of music. Ulla Bendixsen's voice dances delicately in Danish over the techno backdrop, spinning tales of romance and loss while hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, violin, and sequencers pulse on in dark, urgent colors. An exceptional album worthy of its two Danish Grammys. --Karen K. Hugg Folk music has been continually reinvented through the ages. A new generation will bring fresh tools to the old songs, and that's as it should be. So for Sorten Muld to put traditional Nordic ballads in electronic settings should hardly come as a shock--particularly when it's done so well. You're not going to be overwhelmed by techno or clubbed by big beat; this is a band that shapes its ideas carefully within a song's framework and that isn't afraid to use "real" instruments for coloration. Add to the mix Ulla Bendixsen's smooth, seductive voice and you've got something remarkable going on.
