Review

Production mastermind Steve Fisk has rubbed elbows with enough rock stars in the '80s and '90s to merit his own rock-gossip column. Through his work with seminal Seattle bands Nirvana, the Posies, and Soundgarden, Fisk earned his reputation as the producer around town. While artists such as Pearl Jam and Nirvana hogged all the grunge glory, Fisk himself can claim responsibility for the "Seattle sound" more than any other person can. With his Sub Pop release 999 Levels of Undo, Fisk steps out from behind the producer curtain to showcase his own musical prowess. Those who know him for his work with the aforementioned bands might be a little surprised at the result. The smart, beat-heavy sound shares more with knob-twiddlers such as Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada than it does with any flannel-wearing longhairs. Those familiar with Fisk's work with Pigeonhed know that he knows how to build a groove--his dissonant beats and quirky blips resolve into exotic symphonies. 999 as a whole sounds as if Thom Yorke pulled a Being John Malkovich into Fisk's brain to cull his inspiration for Kid A. Past partners-in-crime Heather Duby and Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) lend their talents to Fisk's solo outing, but they're so far in the mix, you'd never guess. It's a wonderful, lush outing--strange and a little offbeat, but wonderful nonetheless. Open-minded listeners apply within. --Courtney Reimer
