Review

The scene opens with the sound of a synth pad enhanced with brooding subtleties that build as a line of verse is recited. Distant drums move into range. Subsonics drop into bottomless holes. Then track 2, "Flesh Canvas," kicks in. Able to build looping sequences and audio effects into irresistible rhythm patterns, Sunkings (Jay Payne, Hugh Ashton, Paul Davies, and vocalist Taz) make heads turn with their powerful sound. Electronic-music pioneer Brian Eno even included a track from their album Hall of Heads on his compilation Antenna 1. Choosing highlights from Soul Sleeping, recorded for the supercool Blue Room label, is difficult: the whole thing moves as one. Over 70 minutes of excellently crafted electronic music. --Paul Clark
