Review

In case you were wondering, the 2000s are shaping up to be the new 1960s. Between the Matthew Sweet/Susanna Hoffs collaboration Under the Covers, Vol. 1, revisiting hits from the Mamas and the Papas, Love, and the Zombies among others, and Bruce Springsteen's We Shall Overcome, reaching back to the '60s (and beyond) of Pete Seeger-informed folk songs and protest rallies, there's a lot of reverence going around for a decade that delivered much timely and timeless music. The Eighteenth Day of May fall squarely into the neo-'60s folk-rock vein, tempered with a splash of Celtic roots, on their lilting and lovely self-titled debut that evokes Fairport Convention and the Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday. Incorporating a myriad of instruments including flute, dulcimer, 12-string guitar, and autoharp, and interspersing traditional ballads with new compositions that sound old, this London-based 6-piece achieves a rustic and gentle sound without slipping into hippie hokum. --Ben HeegeThe Eighteenth Day Of May formed a couple years ago, appropriately on a sunny evening in the month of May. Allison Brice (a New Orleans native with a beautifully mellifluous voice), Richard Olson (a Swedish-born singer and guitarist) and Ben Phillipson (a gifted guitarist and mandolin player who has been playing folk music since his childhood in Oxford) were high on a rooftop above east London. Instead of the inward looking urban sounds of most contemporary groups they decided, there and then, to form an acoustic three-piece with a much more bucolic outlook. 2006The Eighteenth Day of May Formed a Couple Years Ago, Appropriately on a Sunny Evening in the Month of May.
