He is the voice of a generation in southern African, a freedom fighter with a microphone and a mbira who sang a revolution into existence in Zimbabwe in the '70s and '80s, and then found international fame with the Shona music of his homeland mixed in with other pan-African rhythms and some reggae. He was in fact as much of a cultural icon in his homeland as Bob Marley was in the Caribbean, and he has had a recording output as spotty and unpredictable as he sought to balance international stardom with his original concept of roots music. Hondo is a grand example of how good he could be, a blend of almost cosmic energy--a heavy bottom end of bass and percussion, shimmering multiple guitar lines, and impassioned choruses, all centered around the sacred music of the mbira.
