Review

It's easy to imagine Tim Moyer's songs coming to him out of the blue--clever turns of phrase such as "I was Rhett when I should've been Gable" matched with simple but forthright melodies give his craft a spontaneous, uncontrived flow. Whatever stylistic current he dips into--whether the affirming energy of the title track, the funked-up bass and dirty blues of "Jump a Train," or the direct, heartfelt balladry of "If I Could"--Moyer leaves an impression of singing his heart. It's true there are more-than-faint echoes of Tom Petty ("My Own Shoes") and John Mellencamp (the infectious riff from "Inside of Me"), but Moyer saturates every song with a sincerity all his own, which reaches a powerful climax here in the shattering "I Don't Remember You." Some of the songs start promisingly but never really take off, including "Run" or "Inside of Me." Still--as this debut album amply illustrates--Moyer's raw talent is potent and persuasive. This is a singer-songwriter you'll want to pay attention to as he continues to hone his art. --Tom MayTim Moyer's Out Of The Blue is triple A groove with a rock edge.
