Review

The term country-pop doesn't quite do justice to Yearwood's sixth album for MCA: The sound is a kind of modernized countrypolitan, a wide-open, layered pop distinguished by intelligently placed strings, piano, pedal steel, and the harmonies of Kim Richey and Harry Stinson. Fans of Yearwood's more traditional-sounding early recordings will be surprised by the lushness of the ballads and the even-tempoed rockers. If the material isn't as intense as on her fine Hearts in Armor, her soprano remains honest and free from the vocal gimmicks that plague some of her contemporaries. --Roy Francis Kasten
